Planting 20 Million Trees

Client: #TeamTrees & Arbor Day Foundation

Position: Copywriter, Interviewer, Assistant Director

In 2019, YouTuber and notable philanthropist MrBeast hit 20 million subscribers and he wanted to celebrate. So with the help of fellow YouTuber and former NASA engineer Mark Rober, he set out to plant 20 million trees.

The premise was simple: for every dollar donated, MrBeast and Mark would plant a tree. And to put all 20 million in the ground, they partnered up with the world’s largest tree-planting organization, the Arbor Day Foundation.

After interviewing, compiling and scripting planting content for various locations worldwide, we created this recap of all the good done for the first anniversary. It quickly racked up over 1 million views and responses from YouTube itself, YouTube’s former CEO Susan Wojcicki, TedEd and many creators.

Digging into the Roots of a Brand

#TeamTrees isn’t MrBeast and it isn’t the Arbor Day Foundation. It’s something new. And we had to figure out what that new look and feel was. Working with both the #TeamTrees and Arbor Day teams, we established the brand’s path for future growth. Now, #TeamTrees is poised to keep planting with a defined look, voice and tone that is 100% them.

Planting in a Pandemic

The year-long project was kicked off in late 2019, with the plan to travel to each of the selected #TeamTrees planting sites worldwide. But after traveling to only two locations, COVID-19 hit, canceling all travel plans.

We adapted quickly by packaging up an interview kit with filming instructions, mailing it to our star planters around the world and interviewing them via Zoom.
